By leveraging the expertise of its parent company, Italgas, Enaon is the forefront of climate mitigation efforts
Enaon, Sustainable Networks Company of the Italgas Group, has been awarded for the second consecutive year with the “Gold Standard Pathway” assigned within the «An Eye on Methane 2025» report by the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with the support of the European Commission.
Enaon’s recognition for the “Gold Standard Pathway” is a result of leveraging the advanced expertise and best practices of the wider Italgas Group. Through this collaboration, Enaon has achieved data quality in recording and reporting methane emissions, within the OGMP 2.0 framework.
The OGMP 2.0 initiative, under the auspices of UNEP, promotes transparency and accountability in the management and reduction of methane emissions in the oil and gas sector through a comprehensive voluntary reporting framework for its members. Members are assessed annually on a five-level scale reflecting the quality and completeness of their methane emissions data, with the “Gold Standard” reserved for organizations demonstrating the highest maturity.
The “An Eye on Methane 2025” report is based on the fourth year of OGMP 2.0 framework implementation. As the global benchmark introduced by UNEP in 2020, OGMP 2.0 aligns with Net Zero roadmaps and European decarbonization policies for the energy sector, driving excellence in methane measurement, reporting, and mitigation.
Innovation: The “key” to success
Through cutting-edge technologies and operational best practices, Enaon and its subsidiary Enaon EDA, Hellenic Gas Distribution Company—managing over 8,700 km of natural gas network in 115 municipalities—are leading efforts to reduce methane emissions. These actions are central to the Italgas Group’s decarbonization strategy and reinforce their continued commitment to climate mitigation.
Adopting Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) technology via the Picarro Surveyor system is a key milestone for Enaon EDA. This state-of-the-art technology, introduced by Italgas since 2018, has revolutionized methane leak detection by delivering sensitivity and accuracy up to 1,000 times higher than conventional methods, enabling rapid and reliable monitoring over extensive areas.
Notably, in 2023, Enaon inspected 120% of its network with Picarro technology; in 2024, inspection coverage reached 150%, with a sustained target of 200% from 2025 onward. By combining these advanced solutions with smart predictive maintenance algorithms and targeted technical interventions, Enaon EDA not only exceeds traditional regulatory requirements but also sets new standards for emission reductions and mitigates the social and environmental impacts associated with climate change.
