The city will be supplied with virtual interconnection, ending the energy isolation for the region
Hellenic Gas Distribution Company Enaon EDA, a subsidiary of Enaon of the Italgas Group, has successfully completed the required actions for the activation of the basic Natural Gas Distribution Network in the border town of Orestiada, taking another decisive step for the arrival of a cleaner and more affordable form of energy in the local community.
Orestiada will be supplied with a virtual interconnection through the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station, ending the energy isolation for the region, which is remote from the national gas transmission system.
The construction of 60 kilometres of low pressure network in Orestiada has been completed and the Company is now proceeding with the implementation of its planning for the connections of the consumers who are interested.
The first consumer connections are planned by the end of November and work will continue consistently, with the aim of meeting a significant part of the energy needs of the residents already from this winter. The demand for connection to the gas distribution network is high, as about 90 connection contracts have been signed and more than 210 applications of interest have been submitted. According to the Company’s plan, the construction of 728 delivery points is foreseen in 2025 and a total of 2.490 points by the end of 2029.
The project for the development of natural gas distribution infrastructure in Orestiada has a budget of EUR 5.1 million and is co-financed by the Company’s funds and resources from the Operational Programme of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (NSRF 2014-2020).

The benefits of the arrival of natural gas are multiple for the local community, marking a new era for Orestiada that promotes the improvement of the quality of life of citizens, the development of the region and the protection of the environment”.
For his part, the Mayor of Orestiada, Mr. Adamantios Papadopoulos, underlined: «The activation of the natural gas distribution network in Orestiada on Thursday 14/11/2024, in cooperation with Enaon, marks an important step for our city. The use of natural gas will significantly reduce energy costs for households and businesses, while at the same time it will contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of our city. This project enhances economic development and improves the quality of life for our citizens.
