Enaon EDA advances digital transformation of gas network with “Nimbus” H2 smart meters powered by Italgas Group technology

The gradual deployment of new-generation metering systems enhances the efficiency, monitoring, and resilience of Greece’s natural gas distribution network, accelerating its digital transformation

Enaon EDA, Hellenic Gas Distribution Company, is consistently implementing its strategic plan to modernise the natural gas distribution networks it operates in Greece. By introducing the innovative Nimbus H2 smart meter, Enaon EDA is accelerating the technological innovation process in the replacement of conventional meters, taking a further leap forward in the digitalization of the network.

Nimbus is the first smart meter in the sector compatible with the gradual integration of renewable gases and hydrogen into natural gas networks. Far beyond measuring natural gas consumption, it has been designed to support next-generation distribution networks, which are expected to play a key role in the energy transition and the adoption of cleaner energy solutions. The meter is capable of handling methane-hydrogen blends containing up to 23% hydrogen.

Developed by parent company Italgas, this pioneering technology represents a key pillar of the network’s digital transformation, enhancing the intelligence, flexibility, and future-readiness of infrastructure for the distribution of lower-carbon gases.

The overall programme to replace traditional meters across the networks managed by Enaon EDA in Greece started on a large scale in October 2025, with the goal to finish all activities by 2030. The first Nimbus installations took place in March 2026, with a target to install more than 20,000 units by the end of 2026. Nimbus Smart Meters will be used mainly for the Residential market. According to Enaon EDA Development Program 2026-2030, by the end of 2030 is expected a total number of Points of Delivery (meters) of about 920k, of which about 900k will be covered by Nimbus meter installations, marking a leap from conventional metering systems to cutting-edge digital technology.

The Greek version of Nimbus has been implemented by Italgas with the collaboration of Enaon EDA, drawing on its experience in developing and managing energy infrastructure in Greece.

The CEO of Enaon EDA, Ms Francesca Zanninotti, stated: “The implementation of the Nimbus smart meter project represents a milestone in the digital transformation of the natural gas distribution infrastructure in Greece. The first Nimbus installations took place in March 2026. By leveraging the innovation and expertise of the Italgas Group, we are investing in infrastructure that enhances safety, transparency and service quality, delivering significant benefits for households and businesses, as well as for the environment. Nimbus constitutes a strategic technological advantage for distribution infrastructure in Greece, as it ensures future compatibility with renewable gases and strengthens the country’s transition towards a more sustainable energy future.

Nimbus is the most advanced smart gas meter worldwide, managing natural gas distribution with increased accuracy and reliability, and is ready for renewable gases. Its key advantages include:

  • Enhanced sustainability: Thanks to Nimbus, networks can integrate, distribute and measure different types of gas, in addition to natural gas, such as biomethane and hydrogen blends of up to 23%. This is about the transition to a new energy era, which has already begun, with renewable energy sources playing a dominant role.
  • More performance: It is equipped with a battery with a lifespan exceeding 15 years, approximately twice as long as traditional smart meters, significantly reducing maintenance requirements. In addition, as it is based on NB-IoT and LTE-M technologies, it guarantees stable and fast data transmission even under the most demanding network conditions.
  • More safety: It is equipped with advanced sensors that prevent tampering attempts and can immediately interrupt supply when required. Furthermore, its multi-sensor technology enables continuous monitoring of pressure and temperature, ensuring accurate real-time network control.
  • More innovation: Thanks to its innovative design, Nimbus enables remote management and real-time monitoring of networks. With the integration of next-generation software, it is ready to support the future needs of the energy market, acting as a key tool for the digital transformation of distribution networks.

Enaon EDA, leveraging the expertise and innovation of the Italgas Group, continues to invest in cutting-edge technologies, actively contributing to the creation of a “smart”, safe and sustainable energy system for Greece.
